Agrobacterium tumefaciens

Details of Agrobacterium tumefaciens

Agrobacterium tumefaciens is the scientific name of the naturally occurring "crown gall" disease of plants. This pathogen is capable of introducing and replicating its own DNA into the plant's DNA making the disease impossible to cure.

Because of this capability, Agrobacterium tumefaciens is commonly used by genetic engineers to transform plants with recombinant DNA.
