Bess Amaral has 35 years experience as a science educator, moving to Dallas from Roswell, New Mexico, where she was the Goddard Planetarium Director. After completing her undergraduate work at UCLA and UT–El Paso in 1968, she earned her Masters Degree in Educational Administration in 1974. Mrs. Amaral joined the St. Mark's School of Texas science department in 2001 as a seventh grade Earth Science and sixth grade Life Science teacher. She is also the Planetarium Assistant,and sponsors the Space Science Club. She has expanded planetarium programs across the curriculum and created a popular new series of Family Saturday Science workshops. Mrs. Amaral has presented science teacher workshops at the state and national level, written science curriculum, and served on the New Mexico Academy of Science and the New Mexico Governor‚s Task Force on Science Education. She has received several national honors: 1986 Outstanding Math and Science Teacher by the National Science Foundation, 1999 JPL Cassini Educator Fellow, 2000 NASA Solar System Ambassador, 2002 JPL Amateur Saturn Observer, and 1997 Fellow of the International Planetarium Society.
