Everyone knows that Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon. Most people, however, cannot remember who the last man on the moon was - it was Gene Cernan. It appears that almost all recollection of Cernan has been erased from the collective American memory. For instance, most Americans can remember the infamous "One Small Step ..." comment that Neil Armstrong made when he stepped onto the moon, but who can remember what Cernan said as man left the moon for the last time:
"...as we leave the Moon at Taurus Littrow, we leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17."

Both Armstrong and Cernan have something in common besides being astronauts - both graduated from the same school - Purdue University . Purdue can therefore lay claim to the fact that both the first man and the last man on the moon graduated from Purdue. Other famous graduates from Purdue include Orville Redenbacher and some guy who lights his grill with 10 gallons of liquid oxygen !
Gene was on a total of three Space Missions: Gemini-IX-A, Apollo-10 and Apollo 17.
It appears that Gene was snubbed by Mission Control during the flight- i.e. the song of Gene's alma mater - Hail Purdue was not played as a wake up call on Apollo 17 as is traditional.
Gene is at least mentioned in the Space Trivia Contest quiz on the Web!
Gene ranks 24th on the list of total number of hours in space by an Astronaut
