Scheffer Web Finishing was founded in 1978 by a former web printer, Bruce Scheffer. At the time, the market was overloaded with web offset printing presses. Many were equipped with standard combination folders and too many were producing the same standard broadsheet, tabloid, double parallel and quarter folded products. Scheffer had a solution – a method to increase the versatility of the common press folder. He called his new invention a “Prefolder”. The Scheffer Model A Prefolder was an auxiliary folder that incorporated turn bars and plow type folders. It was designed to be mounted just prior to the existing press folder. By slitting, turning and plow folding the web before it entered the press folder, a printer with a Prefolder could produce over 30 variations of the standard folds. Since the introduction of the first Prefolder, Scheffer has gone on to design and manufacture 20 different models. Today, with well over 1000 installations throughout the world, “Prefolding” has become a household word for web printers.
