Upgrading Canal Locks – North and South
Rexroth’s involvement and technologies were crucial to the modernization of two
of the largest and most important canals in the Western Hemisphere: The Panama
Canal, and the Welland Canal in Canada. For the Panama Canal, Bosch Rexroth
supplied the new hydraulics for the miter gates of the Panama Canal lock
systems, a major, multiyear project begun in 1998.
Earlier in the company’s history, Bosch Rexroth hydraulics were used to upgrade
the locks on the Welland Canal, between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, bypassing
Niagara Falls, and carrying all the shipping traffic from the Great Lakes to the
rest of the world.
Movie Sets in Motion – Master & Commander, Pirates of the Caribbean
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is the latest in a string of
motion pictures that feature Rexroth components behind-the-scenes. To simulate
the extreme rolling movement of the far Pacific Ocean on a full-size, fully
rigged replica of 19th century Royal Navy frigate, the ship was mounted on a
one-of-a-kind multi-axis 60-ton gimbal, powered by Bosch Rexroth hydraulics.
Other movies using Rexroth products include : Men in Black, Jurassic Park, The
Perfect Storm, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Volcano, Titanic, Independence Day and
True Lies.
Assembling and Moving the Airbus 380
Rexroth technology helped automate the process of assembling the wings of the
new double-decker Airbus 380, the world’s largest commercial aircraft. Rexroth
hydraulics, linear guide and assembly modules, and advanced HNC controllers
enables the Airbus plant at Broughton, UK, to hold, rivet, re-position and
attach undercarriages to massive airplane wings smoothly and efficiently; the
plant is capable of producing four pairs of wings per month, the most productive
wing assembly plant in the world.
Prefabricated home built with extruded structural aluminum framing
Taalman Koch Architecture, of Los Angeles, CA, developed a completely unique
approach to modular housing: A prefabricated kit engineered to allow for extreme
personalization, built with extruded aluminum framing from Bosch Rexroth. Two
different size models of the "iT" houses are available. Elegant, cool, modern
and easily customizable because of their framework, the iT houses can be
assembled much faster compared to wood or steel structures, and require no
special tools or skills.
Enabling Green Power from Wind Turbines
Since the early ‘90s, Bosch Rexroth AG has been in the forefront of developing
the technologies that are making wind power an important and reliable source of
emission-free power generation. Rexroth produces all of the gears used in wind
turbines: Generator gearboxes, yaw gearboxes for permanent wind tracking and
pitch gearboxes for optimum utilization of wind velocity. We also offer
hydraulic solutions for wind power generating applications.

Helping Bore Tunnels for the L.A. Subway
Industrial Hydraulics and Electric Drives and Controls by Rexroth are key
technologies in many tunnel-boring projects, including the construction of the
Los Angeles subway. The Red Line Metro project required the construction of two
12,500-meter subway tunnels traversing the Santa Monica Mountains near the
famous Hollywood sign. Two tunnel boring machines were upgraded for the job,
using Bosch Rexroth hydraulic components consisting of pumps, motors, and
valves, integrated with custom gearing and specialty hydraulic cylinders.
Nanometer by Nanometer
For FEI, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of electron microscopes for
scientific research and semiconductor manufacturing, a new scanning electron
microscope needed the slowest, stablest movement possible. Advanced Bosch
Rexroth motion control enables electron microscope specimen stage movement at
nanometer rates of speed — approximately the speed of growth of human hair.
Universal Alloy Extrusion Press
Bosch Rexroth provided the hydraulics package for this alloy metal press, which
resembles a gigantic play dough machine. The press, which is the world’s largest
indirect extrusion press, had originally been built in the 1940’s using water
hydraulics; in early 2005, Bosch Rexroth upgraded it to oil hydraulics, for
better and more efficient operations.
