Company Profile

Program objectives: Professionals from many fields and cultural backgrounds participate in this program to enhance their existing academic foundations with comprehensive understanding of GI Science fundamentals and the use and application of GI technologies. Graduates of this program can choose to become GIS practitioners prepared for positions as project managers, applications specialists, and applications software development team members. Those who continue as professionals in other fields will be fully competent to integrate GI technologies into their work. Upon completion of this program, students will be able to: Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the functionality and applications of GIS technology; Express a thorough understanding of the fundamental theory and concepts upon which the technology is built; Explain the principles underlying spatial analysis in all its variations; Demonstrate high level skills in spatial problem solving and spatial analysis; Design and implement a substantial GIS project; Effectively communicate and present project deliverables; Describe how geographic information is used, managed, and marketed globally; Demonstrate competence in the use of various ESRI products including ArcGIS, SDE and ArcIMS and a functional grasp of Visual Basic programming; Understand recent and ongoing advances in GI Systems and Science; Assume continuing independent updating of relevant skills and knowledge; and Undertake needs analysis, system design and implementation of GIS within organizations Instruction is provided through a mixture of lectures, written exercises, seminars, practical work in computer labs and individual and group projects. A final Major Individual Project integrates and demonstrates students’ newly attained knowledge and skills. Interaction with an international group of instructors and students in an intensive learning environment provides a stimulating educational experience and ensures a global context of relevance to students from around the world. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our students are: Professionals, currently employed in any field using spatial information, who would like to deepen their knowledge of the theoretical underpinnings and use of GIS technology, Professionals who would like to begin a career in a GIS-related position, Recent university graduates who wish to build a strong basis for career advancement through a solid foundation in Geographic Information Science and Technology. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What makes this program different? Without a doubt, the University of Redlands is uniquely situated to take advantage of easy and frequent access to ESRI’s highly educated and experienced GIS professionals and their most current projects and technology. All GIS technology courses taught in the program are based on a selection of ESRI’s current commercial courses and taught by professional ESRI trainers. This guarantees that program students receive the most up-to-date and accomplished technology training possible while concurrent concept and theory courses provide the necessary theoretical and practical foundations for complete understanding. Other opportunities for interaction with ESRI include in-depth seminars, project work and social interaction through a weekly U of R colloquium held on ESRI's campus. Complementing access to the practical expertise at ESRI, the University of Redlands provides a world-class educational environment. Consistently ranked among the best small universities in the nation by US News and World Report, Redlands is always cited for its commitment to teaching. As a small, liberal arts and science university founded in 1907, the diverse curriculum provides an opportunity to offer our GIS students programs of study tailored specifically to each person’s entry background and career interests. By encouraging the additional participation of a few qualified short-term students and visiting scholars, the program provides an open learning environment in which international faculty and students learn together about the cutting edge of GIS technology, theory and applications. Students in the program may participate in real-world projects being carried out at the Redlands Institute, our University's collaborative research support center. Project work undertaken in the courses is linked directly to active projects in the Institute and students work closely with the Institute's staff and associated faculty. Some of the Major Individual Projects (MIP) completed by our students have included a decision support model for Puerto Rico, working on a consistent model of GIS data for shorelines, determining the relationship between topography and fire frequency, and electrical substation location determination factors using GIS. Click here to view our previous students' MIP abstracts. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Program accreditation: The University of Redlands is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and has, in addition, programmatic accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and the American Chemical Society. The University is approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing for the State of California. With respect to accreditation for this GIS program, there are currently no accreditation standards or bodies specifically for GIS. However, there is quite a bit of activity in the US and worldwide right now with respect to GIS certification and accreditation. When an accreditation standard for GIS exists, it will be reflected in the University of Redlands' program and accreditation status as soon as possible. In the meantime, virtually all GIS programs now offered in the US are accredited through their Universities or Colleges (as are we). A few Engineering, Planning and Computer Science Departments which are accredited through disciplinary accreditation bodies do offer GIS concentrations within their degree programs, but these are not specifically accredited GIS programs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our graduates: As of December 2005, we will have graduated over sixty students. Our graduates hold positions as Architect/GIS Analyst, GIS Specialist, Research Specialist in GIS, Systems Engineer, ArcSDE Release Specialist, GIS Programmer/Analyst, Transportation Industry Marketing Coordinator, GIS Analyst , GIS Specialist, Watershed Engineer, Director Remote Sensing, GIS and Timber Exploration Data Support Specialist, GIS Analyst/Planner, GIS Technician, GIS\GPS Analyst, GIS Developer, Senior Cartographer, and Product Specialist.
