Metzeler had, in the meantime, become well-known on the streets. But soon people developed a new fascination - conquering the air. The hot air balloon, for example, was developed into an airship that could be steered. The right company to develop the materials for this was Metzeler

Metzeler's products were not only made for transport. The company was also known as a specialist in the production of leisure items - Metzeler's rubber dinghies, lilos and airbeds were not only distinctly strong but also rather colourful.

It all started on 6th March 1863: Robert Friedrich Metzeler was granted a 'personal concession to operate a commercial retail business'. On 14th April Metzeler opened his business at Knödelgasse 2 in Munich, dealing in 'rubber, gutta-percha and rubber elastic goods'.

By 1920 Metzeler had accumulated 25 years of experience and success in aerospace. If a flying object was to be seen high in the sky - the chances were that the Metzeler elephant was flying with it. But the company was gradually turning towards a new challenge - the triumphant progress of the car.
