Cosmos I has shown, that building and launching a solar sail on a shoestring budget is possible. The launch had been accomplished on June 21. According to the Makeev Rocket Design Bureau "no stages separated and the whole launch vehicle, plus spacecraft, flew on a much-shortened trajectory into the Barents Sea." Hopefully the Planetary Society will not give up and the solar sail community will move on, to try again.
