The highest priority thrust of our education initiative in astronomy is to aid basic education by building appropriate and useful connections between the federal astronomy research programs and the teachers, institutions, and commercial interests responsible for educating our young people. --An Education Initiative in Astronomy, 1991 Exploration in Education (ExInEd) is a NASA-supported program of the Special Studies Office (SSO) of the Space Telescope Science Institute. The ExInEd program, headed by Dr. Robert A. Brown, was established to explore new ways to derive social benefit from our space program by communicating its attendant ideas and results. ExInEd uses technology to overcome the time lag and information barriers that keep fresh research results from reaching wide audiences. In one facet of its program, ExInEd develops new types of electronic publications that combine the aesthetic benefits of traditional hard-cover copy with the flexibility and interactivity of electronic data, including audio and full-color video. ExInEd welcomes the expanded information networks that are enabling better, faster, less expensive, and easier-to-use methods of conveying the information and excitement of space activities to broad audiences.

About Company

The mission of the Special Studies Office (SSO) of the Space Telescope Science Institute is to study specific issues of importance to the space science research community, and to produce analyses, options, and recommended strategies. The SSO performs these tasks for the ST ScI Director, the Hubble Space Telescope project, and the NASA astrophysics and planetary programs. While many tasks of the SSO are short-term and narrow in scope, such as conducting studies of specific, time-dependent issues, other SSO tasks are of a continuing nature, such as advisory support of research community committees and panels, science working groups, and NASA advisory councils. A recurrent theme in SSO activities is the goal of increasing the return to the public from their investment in exploring the planetary system and the cosmos beyond. Consequently the SSO is studying and designing ways to improve that benefit, and in particular, to develop stronger connections between the research community and K-12 education through SSO's Exploration in Education (ExInEd) program.
